Water Prayer

This meditation is a form of prayer — it is a song for the element of water. Invite a sacred practice of recognition and gratitude anytime in your day when you come into the presence of water; during your morning shower, when you take a sip of tea, or contemplate clouds through the window. Reflect on the qualities and gifts it brings you. Write them down. Create your own way to remember your prayer. Leave it somewhere close where you’ll see it often.

(I recommend listening to it through the 7 minute audio I recorded : https://anchor.fm/alexa-firmenich/episodes/Water-Prayer-ed08go)

Water,
In stillness, I hear you, inside of me.

I feel your currents,
Nymphlike, riparian, trickling down wet moss;
suspended wet in my lungs, baptizing kidneys, ablutions in every cell, enfolding my brain in tender embrace.

Water,
I have come to know you as consciousness incarnate.
The formless that brings form to all.

I know myself as you for we are made of each other.
An ocean aware of its own waves.

I kneel on your shores, a pilgrimage to all life.

If I listen closely,
you reveal endless potential
of birth and rot and sap
of how to hollow and how to build
of how to yield and how to ruin.

I have come to understand your will
as you carry me towards my fate – that curious marriage of instinct and destiny called wisdom.

Water, I feel you as the planet’s blue blood.

The memory of ancients;
Mother’s milk;
Siren’s song;
A brew stirred by sunlight and tugged by lunar orbs;
drenching thirsty roots, breathing trees, bursting from the Earth’s womb
spring water and crystal foam.
Thank you, for your boundless generosity.

For producing the marrow of our bones and the bark of our forests.
For making yourself known through the sweet tinkling of a dancing creek;
for slithering like a newt across the sand.

Thank you for gifting us the shimmer of moonlight on silver rivers.
For appearing as floods, mists, clouds, hurricanes, raindrops, mighty tides;
Reminding me that we are all these things and fixed to none.

I come to you for guidance.
Teach me to know within myself how to ebb and flow,
To nurture and to be reborn,
To flow equanimous and receptive to all.

I ask this of you, in kinship,
Knowing you to listen, just as I listen.
I pray every day for our planet’s waters to run clean and run free.
That all beings may have the water they need to sustain an abundance of life.

Blessed you are, Water. Thank you.
